The Kick-Off Workshop of the NFDI ELSA Working Group Ethics launches a cross-consortial initiative dedicated to examining ethical questions related to research data within the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI). In this context, ELSA refers to Ethical, Legal and Social Aspects and addresses the broader societal implications of data-driven research.
Research data play a pivotal role in advancing scientific inquiry and informing decision-making processes. However, their lifecycle—from collection and curation to analysis and reuse—entails significant responsibilities. Concerns such as the protection of sensitive information, the avoidance of structural or methodological bias, clarity about data provenance, and responsible stewardship frameworks require systematic reflection. Addressing these dimensions is essential to ensure transparency, accountability, and public trust in research outcomes.
While existing structures within the ELSA Section already engage with legal and data protection issues, this workshop establishes a dedicated forum with a primary focus on ethical considerations. Participants from multiple NFDI consortia, including NFDIxCS, discuss discipline-specific challenges, identify common points of concern, and outline shared objectives for responsible research data practices.
By initiating this working group, the workshop contributes to the development of overarching ethical orientations across NFDI and strengthens collaborative efforts toward sustainable and socially responsible data infrastructures.
