SUMMARY:NFDI ELSA Working Group Ethics: Kick-Off Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Title\n\nNFDI ELSA Working Group Ethics: Kick-Off Workshop\n\nT
easer\n\nThe Kick-Off Workshop of the NFDI ELSA Working Group Ethics brings
together representatives from several NFDI consortia, including NFDIxCS, t
o initiate a coordinated dialogue on ethical challenges in research data ma
nagement.\n\nFull Body Text\n\nThe Kick-Off Workshop of the NFDI ELSA Worki
ng Group Ethics launches a cross-consortial initiative dedicated to examini
ng ethical questions related to research data within the National Research
Data Infrastructure (NFDI). In this context, ELSA refers to Ethical, Legal
and Social Aspects and addresses the broader societal implications of data-
driven research.\n\nResearch data play a pivotal role in advancing scientif
ic inquiry and informing decision-making processes. However, their lifecycl
e—from collection and curation to analysis and reuse—entails significant re
sponsibilities. Concerns such as the protection of sensitive information, t
he avoidance of structural or methodological bias, clarity about data prove
nance, and responsible stewardship frameworks require systematic reflection
. Addressing these dimensions is essential to ensure transparency, accounta
bility, and public trust in research outcomes.\n\nWhile existing structures
within the ELSA Section already engage with legal and data protection issu
es, this workshop establishes a dedicated forum with a primary focus on eth
ical considerations. Participants from multiple NFDI consortia, including N
FDIxCS, discuss discipline-specific challenges, identify common points of c
oncern, and outline shared objectives for responsible research data practic
es.\n\nBy initiating this working group, the workshop contributes to the de
velopment of overarching ethical orientations across NFDI and strengthens c
ollaborative efforts toward sustainable and socially responsible data infra
 structures.
