Strengthening Research Data and Software Competencies - New Episodes of the NFDI Podcast

Exciting news for all research data enthusiasts! The German "NFDI Podcast—For a FAIR Data Future" has released a three-episode series dedicated to the crucial topic of research data and software competencies. Based on the outcomes of our workshop "Research Data and Software Competencies" at the Volkswagen Foundation's Themenwoche "Digital Competencies in Science" in Hannover, these episodes delve into the foundations, challenges, and future of data and software skills in the research landscape.

Episode 6: Strengthening Research Data and Software Competencies

In Episode 6, titled "Strengthening Research Data and Software Competencies", Prof. Michael Goedicke and Alicia Janz discuss why these elements are crucial for science, the challenges involved, and the infrastructures designed to support researchers. The episode highlights the infrastructures designed to support researchers in this domain, providing insights into the Nationale Forschungsdateninfrastruktur (NFDI), NFDIxCS, and various data competence centers. The discussion further elaborates on the crucial role of research software, the FAIR principles that govern data management, and the essential relationship between robust infrastructure and effective competency building within the research community.

Episode 7: Data and Software Competencies for Research: Delivery and Challenges

Continuing the series, Episode 7, "Data and Software Competencies for Research: Delivery and Challenges", addresses the core question: What specific competencies do researchers need when handling data and software? Prof. Ulrike Lucke and Jan Bernoth explore the methods and challenges of competency development within the research landscape. The episode examines practical approaches to training scientists, highlighting existing programs and identifying areas for further development. They discuss strategies for enhancing competency promotion, showcasing initiatives like QUADRIGA, and highlighting the significance of targeted training in improving research skills, ultimately contributing to more sustainable research outcomes.

Episode 8: Collaboration and the Future of Research Data Infrastructure

Finishing this insightful series, Episode 8, "Collaboration and the Future of Research Data Infrastructure", features Prof. Dr. Sonja Schimmler and Christine Hennig. This episode focuses on the significance of collaborative efforts in enhancing data and software competencies among researchers. The conversation explores strategies for fostering effective and sustained cooperation across diverse entities within the research landscape. They provide insights into the challenges and opportunities of interdisciplinary collaboration, emphasizing its importance in advancing research data skills and infrastructure.
