Research Data Management Meets Software Engineering Again: NFDIxCS Workshop at SE26
At SE26 in Bern, the second Working Workshop on Research Data Management for and in Software Engineering (RDMxSE) brought together researchers and practitioners to explore current NFDIxCS services. Across two days, participants discussed the Research Data Management Container (RDMC), metadata for research artifacts, search approaches, and artifact evaluation, while testing prototypes and providing feedback for future development.
After last year's NFDIxCS workshop at SE25, we returned to the Software Engineering conference (SE26) in Bern with the 2nd Working Workshop on Research Data Management for and in Software Engineering (RDMxSE). Software engineering research and research software engineering are areas of interest due to the vast quantity and importance of research software in both domains and remaining open questions.
During four sessions over two days, we presented our current state of services to interested people from software engineering research and industry. Starting with a short introduction to NFDIxCS and our core concept of the Research Data Management Container (RDMC), the participants could try out the prototype for creating RDMCs and provide feedback. To describe and link RDMCs, metadata is an important aspect. Therefore, we discussed research artifacts and their related metadata next, concluding the first half and day of the workshop on 23th February.
On 24th February, we started with the possibilities for searching RDMCs. Here, we are currently working on a keyword- and schema-based search with an alternate natural language-based (i.e., LLM-supported) search, that operates on a knowledge base. For quality assurance, artifact evaluations have been established. We provide and work on the NFDIxCS Artifact Evaluation Platform to support artifact evaluations. At last, participants could try out the platform and its latest advancement, concluding the workshop.
Over the course of the workshop, we collected feedback, which we will analyze and publish in the future.
The annual Software Engineering (SE) conference serves as a platform for exchanging experiences and insights in the field of software engineering. The conference is initiated by the Software Engineering division of the German Informatics Society (Gesellschaft für Informatik e.V.). Numerous members contribute to the success of the event with their expert contributions. The conference is aimed at both software developers from industry and researchers from academia.
