NFDIxCS plenary meeting: Focus on research data

From February 19 to 21, the consortium National Research Data Infrastructure for and with Computer Science convened at the plenary meeting to strengthen cooperation between the participants in the collaborative development of a computer science research data infrastructure. The third meeting of this kind took place on the premises of the Gesellschaft für wissenschaftliche Datenverarbeitung in Göttingen.

Central to the third plenary meeting of NFDIxCS was the exchange of ideas on the key issues surrounding the further development of a research data infrastructure for and with computer science. This includes in particular the development and establishment of a Research Data Management Container (RDMC), which enables research data management according to FAIR data principles. Numerous aspects must be taken into account, from the basic architecture, metadata and storage to publication and standardization processes, each accompanied by ethical and legal issues. The continuous, intensive exchange with the computer science community is also of great importance, as the consortium wants to develop its services not only for, but also together with all sub-disciplines of computer science. To cover all these areas, the participants are working on the overall project in 18 task areas.

Nearly 40 members of the consortium met in Göttingen last Monday to present the current status of work, define future steps and cooperation between the working areas. In a persona workshop the following day, the participants also gained a more precise picture of the concerns and demands that different stakeholders such as students, CIOs, librarians and data analysts have of a computer science research data infrastructure and its services. In concluding working groups, the participants discussed the further goals of the work process in depth, focusing in particular on the mutual relationships between the different task areas of the consortium and cooperation with other NFDI consortia and committees.

The participants‘ work was inspired not only by the different program formats, but also by the very special setting: The co-applicant Gesellschaft für wissenschaftliche Datenverarbeitung Göttingen (GWDG) allowed the meeting to be held in the new building of the Computing Center Göttingen. In its creatively designed spaces, the participants were able to brainstorm in the best possible way and were given an excursion to gain an insight into the physical dimensions of data processing.
