DFG paper explores the digital transformation of research
How are digital technologies changing research and what conditions are needed to support this transformation? The German Research Foundation (DFG) addresses these questions in its new paper “The Digital Turn in the Sciences and Humanities. Current Status and Future Directions: Perspective of the DFG”.
The paper examines how research data and software, artificial intelligence, automation and digital infrastructures are reshaping scientific methods, collaboration and knowledge creation. It also discusses the implications for skills development, research assessment and funding.
Of particular relevance to the NFDIxCS community is the growing recognition of research data and software as scientific resources in their own right. The DFG highlights the need to put the FAIR principles into practice and identifies further work needed to support the development, reuse and long-term maintenance of research software.
The paper also emphasises the role of infrastructures such as the NFDI, the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) and high-performance computing facilities. Sustaining these infrastructures requires reliable funding and planning beyond individual research projects.
For NFDIxCS, these perspectives offer a broader context for developing sustainable research data management services for computer science and supporting the reuse of data and software.
